The Less Obvious Benefits of a Home Irrigation System

Having a home irrigation system installed in your backyard comes with a range of obvious benefits, particularly the time it saves you when you don't need to spend ages watering your plants and the fact that you won't suddenly find your garden suffering after forgetting to water it in hot weather. It lets you get on with more enjoyable garden tasks without having to worry about tedious watering.

But there are plenty of other, less obvious upsides to irrigation, too, and they might just show you why having an irrigated garden is a decision you won't regret.

It can save water

Watering plants manually not only takes up a lot of time, it's also wildly inefficient. A great deal of water is wasted, for two reasons: firstly, you don't have fine control over how much water you provide with a hose or watering can, and people have a tendency to err on the side of too much. Secondly, a lot of the water doesn't make it to the roots of your plants, ending up wasted in the ground around them.

An irrigation system gets around these problems by supplying water smartly. Many systems also have rain sensors, so they'll only provide water when it's needed. That means it's great for the environment and can even play a part in reducing your water bills.

It can prevent weeds

When your home irrigation system is installed, the water can be directed to precisely where it's needed – the root balls of your plants. This means there's a much lower chance of weeds germinating in the surrounding area, as you're not inadvertently watering them alongside the plants you actually want.

Your plants will look better

Giving plants smaller amounts of water more often is better for them than large watering sessions less frequently. This is easy with an automated irrigation system, which optimises the water supply.

The water also goes directly to the roots, so there are no standing water droplets on leaves. This helps prevent disease, keeping your plants looking great and growing healthily.

Your home's value will increase

People love a beautiful outside space, and this is often reflected in the state of the lawn and plants. Having an irrigation system helps ensure you have a lush, bright green lawn for potential buyers to see if you're selling your house.

And, of course, the existence of the irrigation system itself adds value to your home in the same way any extension or addition will.
